I didn’t realize how deception is terrifying until I understood that I had been deceived. First before I make my point I am going to do so by using creationism. That is not my point so don’t get lost in my example, particularly if you don’t agree with the example. It is merely to illustrate a greater reality. Here it goes.
Growing up, and into college I had an elementary view of evolution. On one hand I believed in God and on the other I usually took science as fact. I was enthralled with science. I loved it in class and always wanted to learn more, especially the way things work. I did not really have a stance on evolution and particularly took it as false because that is what most of the christian people I respected said. Though I always thought that there must be some sort of truth to it. In college I began to search out the matter for myself. I took me roughly two years to understand evolution and the position I hold now, creationism. That period of study totally opened my eyes. After diving into the debate I was able to see things so much clearer and realized how terrifying deception can be. I came to see evolution as a faulty way at looking at the world. I saw that it’s presuppositions were anti-christian, anti-bible and namely anti-god. It is not a philosophy that a christian can stand upon. On top of that I found to evidence wanting. It seemed that there was so much belief in an idea that had not been proven.
Once seeing this, I have been able to see how much this idea has influenced culture and the world around us. This of course is not a one to one ratio. Man desires the lusts of his sinful heart. For example because people believe in evolution they now are okay with abortion. None the less, these relationships are there. This is particularly apparent in science. You will see evidence from archeology that will be interpreted in light of evolutionary thinking. Much of the thinking of the global warming debate can be founded in evolution. Morals are often based upon evolutionary thought or lack their of. Moral relativism in particular. The ideas of psychology and adolescence both find their origins in evolutionary thought. Many christian schools seem to teach christian psychology though I have never taken a course, you could say that I’m skeptical. The lists abound. You have television shows, superheros, and picture books all relying on this theory. This line of thinking has its foot hold in our entire fabric of society.
Before I had realized the scope of this theory I had been deceived unknowingly. Even now, I’m sure there are things that I even do that have their foundation in this line of thought. My point is this, even though I was somewhat aware of the theory of evolution and where it fails, I still had been deceived by it in many places in society and it scares me.
In philosophy class I was spurned to think deeper. If evolution is the cause of many social ills we see today what then is the cause of evolution. I don’t know all the steps that lead back to its initial cause but I’m sure it has to do with an underlying philosophy that was built on some sort of skepticism of the world but ultimately it finds its original cause in the very first sin. Sin is the foundation of everything that we see wrong in the world today. This is where I began to be terrified. If I had been deceived by a large amount of things that found their origin in evolution even while knowing what evolution was and why it was wrong, how many more things am I deceived about when it comes to sin. If evolution has an overarching effect on society, how much of an effect does sin have. Society is so intertwined in sin and no one realizes it. An illustration that Paul Washer used was that of a fish. Does a fish know that it is wet? It has no concept of what wet is, it knows nothing else but being immersed in water. I think that is much like to condition of the human race at this time. We are blinded by the realities of sin, immersed in it. As a Christian we have been regenerated and have become a new creation, but sin still has a hold on us. Our flesh still seems to be immersed in this wetness of sin. It is the process of sanctification were God is transforming us into the image of Christ to be ultimately glorified when we are in heaven. While sin very well may be in our lives, Christ is constantly revealing it to us so to repent from it and be transformed into his image.
So while one might think that evolution is to blame for many of the problems we see today it really is the sin of Adam that effects us all and while the blame may be easy to give to others, all men share in the blame of sin. We are all wet and don’t even know it.
