Clayton’s Story

There has been a video that I have been wanting to post ever since I saw it, the eve of the day Clayton past away. A film crew had come to Atascadero from Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley to shoot a documentary on Clayton a couple of months ago. I was finally able to find it online today posted on claytonsstory.com. It is in a film competition and I noticed that the amount of views this video has gotten compared to the others is something like 3,000 compared to 300. It is very good. I can’t seem to figure out how to embed it like I have with some other video so you will have to follow this link.

Also during the memorial service Drew Barefoot put together a montage of videos that Clayton has been in over the years. A great perspective on the life of Clayton McDonald.

P.S. My brother filmed over half of the video’s showed. Pretty much everything that is not an interview or formal event.

This week has caused me to think about eternity a lot. Pastor Tom at ABC preached a sermon dedicated to Clayton today and heaven was its theme.  I remembered this video and thought others would enjoy it. Heaven is heaven because God is there in his glory.

Would you want heaven without Jesus?

This last video really sums up why I wanted to show these videos in the first place.

claytonToday the memorial service for Clayton was held. I have never seen that many people at ABC church.

I copied his obituary, it follows:

Clayton Stanton McDonald went home to be with the Lord March 16, 2009 at 8:33 am just 40 days shy of his 19th birthday. He impacted more people in his short time on earth than many do in 75 or more years. He loved people and spent his days investing in people’s lives, always thinking of others before himself. Everyone who came in contact with him always considered him a close friend even if they only knew him for a brief period. Clayton was diagnosed with leukemia at 7 and under went 2.5 years of chemotherapy, had two plus years of good health and then relapsed in 2003 and underwent a bone marrow transplant. He again experienced a 2+ year period of health and fell out of remission September 2006 and then underwent a second bone marrow transplant in January 2007, and was able to enjoy his senior year in high school with his classmates, even participation on the diving team and qualifying for the CIF championships. After a productive summer working with junior high youth ministry at Atascadero Bible Church and participation in a mission trip to Costa Rica, he began to feel anemic. A trip to Stanford in October 2008 indicated that the leukemia had returned for a fourth time. At this point it was clear that a cure was not possible. Clayton chose to forgo treatment and live out his final days without chemotherapy. He then took the opportunity to tell his story to all who would listen, speaking at Atascadero Bible Church, Cornerstone Church of Simi Valley and multiple schools and youth groups throughout the county. Finally on Wednesday March 11, 200 he spoke to over 900 of his peers at Call Poly. Clayton is survived by his mom and dad Wendy and Stan McDonald and his brother and sister Zack and Samantha, his grandparents and two great grandmothers and extended family.

I was priveleged to spend the last couple hours with him, his family and 20-30 close friends. It was a very emotional and memorable evening. It has been a hard week as we have mourned Clayton’s death. We dearly miss him but are rejoicing knowing that he is with his father in heaven.  He would not have wanted us to wallow in our sorrows but to live our lives loving Christ and by doing so loving others. In his death he glorified his father and now he himself is glorified before the father. Oh to see as he sees now, the face of Christ in all of Christ’s glory. For that is why we celebrate, he is home and God has been glorified in his death.

Clayton was very much a celebrity in the community of Atascadero. Loved and known by all. As a result and at the work of many of his friends part of his life has been captured on video. Enjoy these clips of Clayton, as he may appear small in stature he was a man before God.

There are various videos and the memorial service on this website. http://www.abcchurch.org/clayton/

Clayton had the opportunity to speak at the youth group at Francis Chan’s church, Cornerstone. It was recorded and you can watch it here. http://www.vimeo.com/2613276

There is also of course the many videos that he and my brother stared in, which my brother produced at http://www.youtube.com/user/nickisshort Clayton was such a fun loving kid and you can see a sampling of that in these videos. They make me laugh every time.

More videos can be found in my recent post. Clayton’s Story. These are by far the best quality and I would recommend you see these first.

Clayton was very much like a brother to me. I grew up with him as he was my brother’s best friend and was always around. The theme of clayton’s life and the impact that he seemed to have on everyone was his love. He loved everyone and that was exceedingly aparent at his memorial service. If you ever had a chance to know this young man you would know of what I speak. He will be greatly missed and the impact that he has made on my life and those he came in contact with was profound. I will never be the same.

Be a Man

Well I haven’t posted for a really long time. I saw this video today and immediately thought that I needed to post it. It is very convicting especially since I just bought a video game, The World of Goo which is amazing by the way, and have been finding myself slipping into complacency. While the video is intended for men I’m sure it can be helpful to anyone.

Physics is awesome

I recently came across these videos. They are really neat. I’m pretty sure I’m going to build a Ruben’s tube, looks easy to do and the effect is awesome. I hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Top 10 Amazing Physics Videos

I just saw this video on Alex Chediak’s blog. It speaks so much wisdom in painting a picture of biblical manhood in a culture that wastes its sexuality.

Paradoxes of the Universe

After reading through two books by well respected theologians I noticed a trend. The books were “The Holiness of God” by RC Sproul and “Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God” by JI Packer. I have found it fascinating that both authors have resorted to physics to use examples that correlate to God. RC Sproul used the creation account and JI Packer used modern physics by illustrating the dual nature of light. Light is both a particle and a wave at the same time. Both are observed and seem irreconcilable but it is fact light is both at the same time. A wave being a sound wave or vibration, and a particle being something like an atom. Light is referred to as a photon. The way JI Packer used this is in relation to evangelism and God’s sovereignty. The apparent dilemma deals with God’s sovereignty and human free will. To say that God is sovereign means he is in absolute control of everything. He is the one who converts sinners, brings people to himself, even causes man to sin, remember pharaoh, yet he also commands us to evangelism. In evangelism God holds the individual accountable to their own actions and decisions yet God is in control and holds them accountable. What the book is about is that both of these sides are completely true, the Bible affirms them. It would be foolish to deny either aspect. What JI Packer points out is that this is a strikingly similar to the dual nature of light paradox. Continue Reading »

The Porpoise Driven Life

Following is a hillarious satire of the Purpose Driven Life. Don’t miss original fin and coming up for air. This film does a good job of showing some of the errors of today’s christian culture.

Also check out what MacArthur has said on the topic.

This should have been posted a week or two ago but I got distracted with school. When driving home for Thanksgiving I had the opportunity to listen to two amazing sermons. One by MacArthur and the other by Paul Washer. The topic of both of them, as highlighted by the title, was regeneration and justification. These are not sermons that are dry and boring, as many think when theological terms come up, but two of the best sermons I have heard in awhile. They both rank pretty high on sermonaudio.com. The essence of both of these sermons is what does it mean to be saved and what then does it look like? How is it that a man who is totally depraved and can do nothing to come to God or save himself be remade into a new man by the power of the holy spirit? How is it that this happens? Is it simply a little prayer or a decision made once during an alter call or something much more? These sermons show that it is something much more, something I had not realized until this last year or two. Continue Reading »

Reading the Bible

I think like most people, I find it hard sometimes to find time to read my Bible. It is not that I don’t want to read it or learn from its pages, I do and long for that knowledge, I just seem to get distracted. Growing up going to church, I always heard that it was imperative that you read your Bible. You must be in the Bible everyday in a quiet time or something to grow in Christ. I agree, we will love, serve, honor, ect. Christ more the more we know about him. So reading for me unconsciously and consciously at times has been a task to do. Something to check off of a list. If I can read through the Bible in a year, then I’ll be better for it. I’ve tried this method of study for some time. I do learn, but I feel like I forget it after a couple of days. I read the Bible but I’m not really learning that much. The word of God is not being that impressed upon my heart.

As I have been listening to different men of God, namely Paul Washer and John MacArthur I noticed that their method of study differs to what I’m used to. It is that of repetition. They a book of the Bible over and over again many times. I am going to try to adopt MacArthur’s recommended method of study. He recommends taking a small book or seven chapters of a book from the New Testament and reading it everyday for a month. While it may seem tedious after the tenth time by the thirtieth read you will have practically memorized it. I can’t say that I’ve ever done this before, but my roommate has done so with James and he knows that book inside and out. I think I’m  going to start with 1 John or Ephesians and then move onto John.

You can read more in detail about what MacArthur recommends or listen a short audio clip describing what I just laid out.
